Thomas’ restaurant chain was part of the Downtown Los Angeles scene during the early to mid-1900s. If you worked downtown during the 1930s or 40s, chances are you would have hit up one of their four convenient locations for lunch! Two of their four locations were in exceptional spots including 351 South Hill Street (right next to the L.A. landmark of the Angels Flight funicular railway in the Bunker Hill district) and 201-3 North Broadway which was literally across the street from the front of L.A. City Hall!
It’s unknown when the Thomas’ chain actually closed, and I’ve been unable to find any other associated materials other than the matchbook that proved it existed! But credit where credit is due, proprietor R. Melvin Thomas produced a beautiful, stylish and super fun matchbook that we are very excited to share!
