The “Streets of Paris” was a burlesque bar known for its live music, entertainment & dancing and was located at 54 Mason Street in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco. It was owned by Sidney E. Wolfe, who was christened the “Tavern King of San Francisco” during the 1940s (at the peak of his career, Wolfe owned or co-owned at least 18 restaurants & nightclubs in San Francisco). The matchbook cover features either a French or San Franciscan woman in a beret and mini skirt leaning against a lamp post with the slogan “the best bet in town.” It’s unknown when “Streets of Paris” closed, but Wolfe was arrested in 1945 when he was charged with refilling whiskey bottles, a method used by nefarious bar owners to serve cheaper alcohol and increase profits! The building which once housed this infamous bar still exists and today the location is a karaoke bar.
