The “Kwan Yin Temple” was a bar nestled inside “Yee Mee Loo” a Cantonese restaurant located at 690 Spring Street within Los Angeles Chinatown. “Kwan Yin” refers to a Bodhisattva in Buddhism associated with compassion. Yee Mee Loo was opened in the 1930s by Chinese immigrants and the gorgeous back bar of the Kwan Yin Temple was originally sourced from the Warner Brothers design studio and used as a prop in the 1937 film “The Good Earth.” After almost 60 years, Yee Mee Loo & Kwan Yin Temple closed for good in 1989 when the landlord decided to redevelop the property and turn it into a strip mall.
